MISCELLANEOUS, Folk Carving. A handcarved wood Welsh Love Spoon. This one has three trapped wood marbles or balls). Welsh Love Spoons date back to the 1600s, but this one is likely souvenir craft dating back to the 1950s. Traditionally, the young man would spend hours carving the lovespoon with his own hands, in the hope that the girl would accept it. If the girl accepted the spoon, she would demonstrate her interest in him and they would commence on a relationship, which is the origin of the word 'spooning'. This spoon has the following symbols: Balls in Cage (love held safe and the number of children one wishes to have), Hearts (signifies that the girl/boy has taken hold of the young man/woman's heart), Chain (signifies loyalty and faithfulness and a wish to be together forever), Horseshoe (a symbol of Good luck and Good fortune). Wales, circa 1950-1960. 19" long. Mint.
